  • Follow in the footsteps of explorers to understand the landscape, history, legacy and ecology of the Roma region.

When early explorer Mitchell stood at Mount Abundance overlooking the rich native grasslands, he recognised this as prime agricultural land. It is also the last place explorer Leichhardt was seen alive and penned a final letter before his mysterious disappearance.

Discover how this landscape has changed since the early European explorers. Learn about its sometimes brutal history and how it thrives today.

This fascinating tour of Roma and introduction to the region explains the past and present and sees it in the context of its natural attributes and ecology. With an extended visit to the exciting Roma Sale yards on sale day, you will understand how the ‘abundance’ Mitchell saw has evolved into the legacy of agriculture in the region.

A highlight is a picnic lunch at Mount Abundance where wildlife and soaring wedge-tailed eagles take refuge, and iconic bottle trees grow in their natural habitat. In the surrounding grasslands and woodlands we may spot emus, black-striped wallabies and grey kangaroos. With your eco-guide, you will see this archetypal Australian landscape and Roma town through local eyes and uncover the secrets of how humankind and nature continue to adapt to each other here.
